Quite recently, I wanted to pin sticky notes to the taskbar since I use them all the time. But, then I was able to do it. I've noticed that many other Windows 10 users have had similar problems. Many Windows 10 users simply could not pin to the Start menu. I then tried the following fixes, one of which worked and solved the problem of not being able to pin programs in the taskbar/start menu. I will express the consistency that worked for me. Depending on the situation, one of the following fixes should work for you.




Fix No. 1: Troubleshoot using Windows PowerShell


Windows PowerShell The solution to many problems in Windows 10, from zipping/unzipping files in Windows 10, to wiping the entire hard drive to find your Windows 10 product key, you can do a number of things with Windows 10 PowerShell. You can fix any issues that cause you to be unable to pin programs in the Start menu or Taskbar. Here are the steps for -

Type PowerShell in the search bar next to the Windows icon
Click and click Run as administrator from the right-hand pane
Copy and paste the following command in the Windows PowerShell window.

After the command is executed, restart the computer

Fix No 2: Clear taskbar items


If you can't pin programs in the Taskbar or Start menu, chances are you have corrupted the files in the Taskbar and the steps outlined below are intended to help you get rid of all such corrupt files -


When the taskbar window opens, select all items, clear all items, and delete them + Shift
Restart your computer

Fix No. 3: Change the Group Policy Editor settings


Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box
Type gpedit.sc to open the local group policy editor
On the left, click User Configuration and then click Administrative Templates
Go to the Start menu and the taskbar
Now, on the right you will see Prevent users from customizing their start screen, click on it
Select Notes without Configuring and then Apply and then click OK

Fix 4: Create missing keys or repair keys in the registry editor

Sometimes when there are missing or corrupt registry keys, you may encounter several problems and one such problem is not being able to pin programs in the taskbar. Here's how to create or repair missing registry keys -

Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows + R keys
Type regedit in the Run dialog box to open Registry Editor
Navigate to the following registry keys
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ lnifile

Right-click on the folder in the infill, select New, select the value of the string (REGSZ), name it as a shortcut
Restart your computer

Fix No. 5: Restart Windows Explorer

Here's another simple fix after which you should be able to pin your applications or programs to the taskbar or start menu. You can try restarting Windows Explorer or File Explorer manually from within the Task Manager.

Quickly open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Right-click on Windows Explorer under Apps
Click on the Restart option

Fix number 6: Try creating a new user account

Press Windows + I to open the settings
Now go to the account
From the left side, select Menu Family and Other Individuals
Select someone else connected to this PC
I click this person has no sign-in information
Choose to add a user other than a Microsoft account
Enter the username of your choice
Click Next
Now, go to the newly created account and try pinning the programs in the taskbar and start menu and see if the problem is fixed. If yes, it means your old account was corrupted.
