Otto Wichterle was born on October 27, 1913, in Protestov, Czech Republic (then Austria-Hungary). As a lover of science since his youth, Wichterley earned a doctorate in organic chemistry in 1936 from the Prague Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT). He taught as a professor at Alma Mater in the 1950s while creating an absorbent and transparent gel for eye implants.

In 1961, Wichterle, who wore glasses himself, made the first soft contact lens with a baby erector set, a bicycle light battery, a phonograph motor and a DIY device made with homemade glass tubing and mold. This was the first version of the modern contact lens that is now in use.

Wichterle’s talent is also reflected in the fact that he invented contact lenses in his home, where he was refining hydrogel developments after political instability pushed him away from ICT.

Although Wichterle is well-known as the inventor of the contact lens, his inventions also formed the basis of sophisticated medical technologies, such as "smart" biomaterials, which are used to restore human connective tissue, and are bio-recognized. Polymer, which has inspired a new standard for drug administration. As the inventor of countless patents and a lifelong researcher, Wichterley was elected the first president of the Academy of the Czech Republic since the country's founding in 1993.

Wishing Wichterle a doodle on his 108th birthday, Google said, "Happy Birthday, Otto Wichterle— Thanks for helping to see the world right!"
