Fix Windows Defender Won’t Update

How to Fix Windows Defender Won’t Update

Windows Defender is the pre-installed antimalware software that comes with the Windows 10 operating system that protects users from malware.

Many Windows 10 users have expressed concern that Windows Defender will not update their machine. Most of these problems are caused by the failure to update the Windows Defender virus definition, which usually occurs when the user's Internet connection is strong.

When you first start Windows Defender, you may see a notification about the definition update, or when you try to check for updates and it says that they cannot be checked, downloaded, or installed. If the Windows Defender update fails, try the solutions below to fix the problem.

How to fix Windows Defender will not update

1: Initial correction

Before moving on to a more detailed explanation, let's follow some basic tests and procedures:

Check to see if you have any other security software installed, as this will stop Windows Defender and prevent you from getting updates. Remove any anti-malware software currently installed on your computer.

Check for updates through the Windows Defender Update interface, and if that doesn't work, try Windows Update; To do this, click the shield icon in the notification area, select Virus and Threat Protection, and then check for updates.

Install all pending updates and restart your computer before retrying the Windows Defender update; Set up Windows Defender to automatically check for updates.

Run Troubleshooter for Windows Update.

2: Install Manually Update Definition

Updates are often delivered by Microsoft via Windows Update, Automatic Updates, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Due to issues with these services, Windows Defender will not update in some cases.

Manually update the definition in this situation as mentioned above. If you are able to install updates manually, the problem is due to a Windows Update issue. You can visit the Windows Security Portal for more updates.

3: Set Windows Defender service to automatic mode

Step 1: Open the run box by pressing Windows key + R keyboard shortcut.

Step 2: Follow the Enter key and type services.msc in the search box

Step 3: Right-click the Windows Defender Antivirus service and select Properties.

Step 4: Make sure the service status is up and working.

Step 5: Make sure the startup type is automatic (if not, select the startup type as automatic and click start).

Step 6: Click Apply then click OK.

4: SFC scan

Step 1: Press start button.

Step 2: In the search box, type cmd.

Step 3: To run the command prompt in elevated mode, select Run as administrator.

Step 4: After typing sfc / scannow, press Enter.

It will check if any malicious system files are preventing default antivirus updates.
