Snapchat Conversation won't Disappear

Why Do Some Messages on Snapchat not Disappear?

Snapchat lets you send invisible messages to your friends so that you both have a fun way to communicate. Both the text and the image/video snap will eventually disappear unless you save them in the chat and this is what makes Snapchat truly unique. You may have noticed that some messages that you send to someone on Snapchat may not disappear even if your other messages eventually disappear.

Snapchat has a lot of subtleties that indicate when your messages disappear and when they don't. You may have noticed that sometimes some messages take longer to disappear than others. One may disappear after 24 hours while other messages may remain there for a few days.

Why don't some messages disappear in Snapchat?

There are several reasons why some Snapchat messages may disappear, while others may not last longer. It all depends on you and the specific person you're talking to so if you're wondering why it takes longer for messages to disappear for this person, it's probably to do something with your settings.

Messages are not set to be deleted after 24 hours of viewing

A setting can be changed between you and the person you're talking to, which can be changed when you delete messages sent to each other. By default, messages are set to be deleted as soon as they are viewed - this means that if they send you a message and you see it, it will disappear directly.

If you notice that some messages with your friends disappear instantly where the messages with this person are, it is probably because your settings are different. If you want to delete messages as soon as they are viewed, you need to hold the conversation> More> Make sure it is set to be deleted after viewing. If you want to keep it longer, set it to Delete 24 hours after viewing.

They did not open your message

One thing that can get you here is that you send them a message and when you open the chat you realize that the message is still there and it has not disappeared. If your chats are set to be deleted 24 hours after viewing, you need to be aware that the person will disappear within 24 hours of viewing them. So if you send them a message and it takes them 2 days to open, it will only take 24 hours for them to disappear once they open it.

They saved the message

Sometimes the chat may not disappear because another person saved it. When someone saves a chat, it means that the chat will remain there until you or the recipient deletes it. You will know when a chat has been saved by you or the recipient because it will be gray.

You may notice that after viewing, some chats are still there even though they have passed the 24 hour set for deletion. The only thing that keeps it down is a bug in Snapchats End that lets you see the messages that you or the recipient sent one day after you open them. There's no real explanation for why they're still there so the best thing to put it down is the Snapchat error.

Didn't read the chat

Another reason your messages don't delete after 24 hours of viewing is because the chat hasn't been read. Once the chat is read by the recipient, it may have a chance to disappear. To check if a chat has been read, you can simply hold the chat to see if it has been viewed by the recipient's name. If it is not seen, then the messages have not disappeared.

Failed to send message

One last reason why you still see a chat you've sent that hasn't disappeared yet is that the message failed to be sent in the first place. Messages usually fail to be sent when there is not enough internet to send the message - then Snapchat will notify you that the message failed to be sent so you can resend or delete it. If your message is not sent, that's why you keep seeing it - if you want to see it, you'll have to send it again, only then it will disappear after viewing.
