Hide Online Status on Facebook App or Messenger 2023

Facebook may be responsible for keeping the word "social" on social media, but there are times when you don't want to get involved with friends - or you don't have time.

If you want to log in to Facebook online without your friends knowing, you can easily turn off your "active status" so that you can appear offline.

There are three different places where you can control your active status: Facebook in a web browser, Facebook mobile app, and Facebook Messenger mobile app.

How to turn off active status on Facebook in a web browser

To turn off active status and appear offline on Facebook:

1. Open Facebook in a browser and log in, if you haven't already.

2. Click on the circular messenger icon in the top right corner

3. In the Messenger drop-down, click on the three-point icon at the top.

Click on the three-point icon above the Messenger sidebar.

4. Click Close active status in the drop-down menu.

Select the "Turn off active status" option.

5. A pop-up will show whether you want to turn off active status for all contacts, turn off active status for all contacts or turn off active status for only some contacts. When you click on the next two options, a box will appear where you can enter the names of specific people.

6. When done, click OK.

Note: You can also do this by clicking on the Messenger icon in the upper-right corner and clicking View All in Messenger at the bottom of the drop-down menu.

Then, on the full-screen Messenger page, click the three-dot icon in the upper-left corner, select Preferences, click Turn off active status in pop-up, and choose your active status.

How to turn off active status in Facebook mobile app

1. Open the Facebook app on your phone.

2. Tap the three horizontal lines (called "Hamburger Menu") in the upper-right corner of Android or in the bottom-right corner of the iPhone.

3. Tap Settings and Privacy and then tap Settings

Tap "Settings" in the "Settings and Privacy" drop-down.

4. Tap Active mode under the Privacy section

Select "Active Status" below the "Privacy" section.

5. Move the slider to the left, turn off the show when you're active, and then confirm by tapping off the pop-up.

After swiping the slider to the left, select "Turn off" in the pop-up.

How to turn off active status in Facebook Messenger mobile app

1. Open the Facebook Messenger app on your phone.

2. From the main chat page, tap Avatar in your profile at the top-left of the screen.

Tap your profile icon in the upper left corner.

3. Tap the active state

Select "Active Status".

4. Turn off the show when you're active by moving the slider to the left, and then confirm by tapping off the pop-up.
