How To Add Someone To A Group Text On The iPhone

Group messaging (AKA group texting) is a fantastic feature of iOS 10 and iOS 11 powered iPhones and iPads. Group messaging is a great feature that allows cell phone users to stay in touch with multiple friends, colleagues and acquaintances.

As your message develops, you may want to add more people. It is important to note that there is a difference between group iMessage and group messages. Apple Lingo: A group iMessage is when everyone in the group uses an iPhone. This makes it possible to add/remove members from your text group.

Group messages are actually sent using the cellular network's SMS function because active users are using a combination of iPhone and Android devices. If this is your plight; You need to create a new text thread with or without contacts.

How to start a group message on iOS 10 or iOS 11

There are a few more apps on the market that support group texting but for this specific article, we will focus on the ubiquitous iMessages app that most iPhone and iPad users use every day.

One of the great things about Apple products is the ability to use the iMessage application on a variety of devices. The options listed below apply to all Apple products, such as; Mac, MacBook, iPhone, and iPad.

So, if you're ready to invite people to your group chat, please follow these instructions:

From your iPhone, locate the Messages app and tap to open it

By tapping the arrow keys on the top-left you come back from any conversation you already have. Tap the 'New Message' icon in the upper-right corner of the "Messages" screen (looks like a notepad with a pen).

You can start typing the name of the person you want to invite to the To: area. If the invitees are already in your address book, it should be autocomplete as soon as you type their name or number. You can also tap the + icon to browse your contact list.

For those who are not in your address book, type the recipient's phone number in the To: field. If you want to add people who are using iPad, you can type their Apple ID instead.

To all intended recipients: Repeat the steps above until the case is added.

Type the message you want to send. You only need to type it once.

Finally, press the Send button.

Now every member you add will receive that message. This allows all members of the text group to answer and see each other's answers. Of course, recipients can opt-out of group text at any time, or you can remove them from the group yourself (see the TechJunkie article about removing someone from a group message).

If someone in the group text is not an iPhone user, they are not using the iMessage app. By the color of the send button you will be able to tell who is using the iPhone and who is not. If the text is blue, they are an iPhone user. If it is green, the person is not an iPhone (or iOS user in general) and you are receiving standard text instead.

Note that not all emoji or animations will work for everyone in the group. This is especially true for those who have a different version of iOS or an alternative operating system in general However, the text messages themselves should be good.

Add / remove group chat members

If you've already been actively engaged in a conversation with one or more people, or just forgot to add someone, I can show you how to add them. What you do is:

From your iPhone, locate the Messages app and tap to open it.

Select the person you want to add to the conversation and tap to open it.

Tap the detail icon (I'm like a circle), located at the top right of the screen.

Tap Add Contact.

Add: In the field, type the name of the person you're adding (if they're already in your address book) or their full phone number.

Again, for those who use the iPad, you can type their Apple ID if it makes things easier.

To finish it, go ahead and tap Done

If you want to remove a contact from the conversation, follow the same steps listed above to access the group details. Once you reach the contact list you can swipe left the contact name which will bring up a red removal option. Tap the removal option, and make sure the work pops up. MacBook and Mac users will see the "delete" option instead of using the swipe method.

Leave the group message conversation

There's too much going on in a conversation that you don't want to hear anymore? Leaving a group conversation is actually very easy unless there are three or more people in that group. If a particular conversation is moving, you can:

Open the messaging app and go to the conversation where you want to free yourself.

Tap the detail icon (which is in a circle, located at the top right of the screen.)

Quickly mash the option to leave this conversation listed in bright red and at the bottom of the page.

When the confirmation option appears, tap on it and you will no longer be notified of the activity.

Group messaging is an outstanding feature but some people do not enjoy constant updates and alerts on their phones. This is a great feature, you need to use it carefully to avoid overwhelming yourself and others with messages in groups.

Troubleshooting for group iMessages

Some users have reported that they are unable to add more than a certain number of contacts to their text messages on an iPhone. This may surprise you, but certain carriers have created these restrictions to protect users from spam messages.

If you need to network with a large group of people, it is best to choose another messaging application. Google Hangouts, Slack, and more are available in the App Store. Many of these third-party applications are more versatile and user-friendly for communication across different platforms and operating systems.

If you have trouble adding more members, it may be due to career limitations. This can be attributed to miscommunication.

If you've ever synced your contacts with your email, you may have some email addresses instead of phone numbers. It can work with iCloud accounts but not with other emails Check that the contact you are trying to add is correct.

Another problem with adding your contacts to a group iMessage is trying to add someone with a screen time limit. With Apple's Screen Time added, users have the ability to turn off functions, including iMessage, on their Apple devices. If you have trouble adding a contact, it's a good idea to ask them if they have these restrictions set.
