Stickam - Streaming Site Stickam Shuts Down
Stickam.com is a social network that provides live video streaming of web pages, online auctions, company websites, and blogs.
Since 2005, Stickum Misfit has been a haven for live streaming video blog channels to share the lives of young people, emo bands and anyone else. But tonight at midnight the stick will be closed forever. While it doesn't give a reason, it did say that "we're very sorry to announce the closure of Stickum" which means it could just go out of steam because competitors like YouTube have taken the spotlight.
The sticker got its name by keeping users "sticky" and embedding their video streams on other websites. It grew to 10 million registered users, 6 million monthly unknown, 3 million daily streams viewed and was once named "Teens Top Video Destination" by Nielsen in 200.
Steakum gave birth to web celebrities like Geigad, hosted musicians like Andrew W. K. and earned a fair share of his controversy. Kiki was approaching Cannibal as a risky teenager became a hit for Stickam, only to be repulsed by being insulted by her fans.
In the years leading up to the high-day, more general-focused competitors overtook Stickum. Services like Ustream, Livestream, Google Hangouts and YouTube Live allow everyone to stream live video to a larger audience. Now some of the stars of Sticam, including Guide, run their videos on YouTube where they can earn a share of the revenue.
A broken listener and aging key user can cause the death of the base stick. Although the site is technically closed tonight, it will remain accessible until February 28 so that people can download their recordings.
Sticam's team concluded, "After seven great years, we are incredibly sad to say goodbye. The first dedicated website was user-generated video and chat. There was no blueprint, no roadmap to follow. We didn't know where you would take us. Thank you all. We will miss the Stickum community. "
