1. Disable reading only from the notebook property
By default, OneNote saves all notebooks in Windows' OneDrive app. You can view those notebooks from the File Manager menu.
If you only enable read-on for a notebook, it's time to disable it. With read-only mode, you can simply open the notebook and make no changes to it.
Step 1: Open the file manager on a Windows PC using the Windows + E shortcut.
Step 2: Navigate to OneDrive> OneNote, and you'll see all your saved OneNote notebooks in the list.
Step 3: Right click on the notebook that is bothering you and open the properties.
Step 4: From General> Properties, disable read only and click OK at the bottom.
2. Reopen the notebook
This strategy worked wonders for us when we encountered OneNote syncing and offline errors on a specific OneNote notebook. You can close a notebook and reopen it from the same location. Here you will find everything you want to do.
Step 1: Open OneNote on Windows 10/11.
Step 2: Click on all the notebooks above and right click on a notebook which shows read-only status.

3. Get an editable link
OneNote allows you to share notebooks with others. If you work with a shared notebook and only receive a link to view, you will not be able to edit the note. It will only show read-only status.
You need to ask the administrator to send you a notebook link with permission to edit. Here's how.
Step 1: Open the OneNote notebook that you need to share.
Step 2: Get File> Share> A Sharing Link.
Step 3: Click Create an Edit Link and share it with others.
From now on, anyone who can access the link can switch to the OneNote notebook. So be careful when sharing with others.
4. Combine from other devices
It is possible that the same note is open on another device. For example, if it's open on a Mac and you're trying to access it on a Windows PC.

5. Active Microsoft 365 subscription

7. Update
If you use the native Windows One Note app, you'll need to check for updates or install the latest version from the Microsoft Store.
When you try to access a notebook, an old One Note built into Windows 10/11 may show read-only status.
Open the Microsoft Store app and go to the Library menu. Click Gate Update, and you'll see the new OneNote build, if available.
