Fix OneNote Read-Only Status

Top 7 Ways to Fix OneNote Read-Only Status

Microsoft OneNote is one of the oldest and feature-rich note-taking apps. Unfortunately, even after years of development, the software continues to suffer from random syncing problems, offline errors, and read-only status. The latter is very confusing because it will not allow you to make any changes to the notes in OneNote. Here are some of N's best ways to fix the OneNote read-only status on Windows.

One note may only be readable due to incorrect sharing permissions or changes to notebook features. Let's discuss each possible situation and solve the problem for you.

TOP 7 WAYS TO FIX ONENOTE READ-ONLY STATUS

1. Disable reading only from the notebook property

By default, OneNote saves all notebooks in Windows' OneDrive app. You can view those notebooks from the File Manager menu.

If you only enable read-on for a notebook, it's time to disable it. With read-only mode, you can simply open the notebook and make no changes to it.

Step 1: Open the file manager on a Windows PC using the Windows + E shortcut.

Step 2: Navigate to OneDrive> OneNote, and you'll see all your saved OneNote notebooks in the list.

Step 3: Right click on the notebook that is bothering you and open the properties.

Step 4: From General> Properties, disable read only and click OK at the bottom.

2. Reopen the notebook

This strategy worked wonders for us when we encountered OneNote syncing and offline errors on a specific OneNote notebook. You can close a notebook and reopen it from the same location. Here you will find everything you want to do.

Step 1: Open OneNote on Windows 10/11.

Step 2: Click on all the notebooks above and right click on a notebook which shows read-only status.

Step 3: Select Close this notebook.

Step 4: Go to File> Open and select the notebook location from OneDrive and open it.

Try opening the note from the notebook section and you won't see read-only errors.

3. Get an editable link

OneNote allows you to share notebooks with others. If you work with a shared notebook and only receive a link to view, you will not be able to edit the note. It will only show read-only status.

You need to ask the administrator to send you a notebook link with permission to edit. Here's how.

Step 1: Open the OneNote notebook that you need to share.

Step 2: Get File> Share> A Sharing Link.

Step 3: Click Create an Edit Link and share it with others.

From now on, anyone who can access the link can switch to the OneNote notebook. So be careful when sharing with others.

4. Combine from other devices

It is possible that the same note is open on another device. For example, if it's open on a Mac and you're trying to access it on a Windows PC.

In this case, OneNote will continue to show read-only status. This means you can only open and use one note on one device at a time.

5. Active Microsoft 365 subscription

Are you using the OneNote app that comes with the Microsoft 365 subscription? Most laptop OEMs offer a 30-day free trial for a Microsoft 365 personal subscription.

If you use a free trial, it will expire after 30 days, and the OneNote app will be stuck in read-only mode.

You need to buy a Microsoft 365 pack or choose the free One Note app for Windows from the Microsoft Store.

6. Check undrive storage

Microsoft offers only 5GB of OneDrive storage for free. This may be insufficient for OneNote Power users. You may purchase additional OneDrive storage from Microsoft or opt for the Microsoft 365 subscription which unlocks all Office Apps and 1TB OneDrive storage.

7. Update

If you use the native Windows One Note app, you'll need to check for updates or install the latest version from the Microsoft Store.

When you try to access a notebook, an old One Note built into Windows 10/11 may show read-only status.

Open the Microsoft Store app and go to the Library menu. Click Gate Update, and you'll see the new OneNote build, if available.

If OneNote pages still display readability, try accessing the same notebook from the OneNote Web. Even with competitors like the Noton, Apple Note and Evernote, the One Note has remained at the top of our list for a variety of reasons.

Problems like read-only notebooks can ruin your mood. The above steps should fix the problem and you can start editing your notes again.
