How to Remove/ Block Skype Ads

How to Remove/Block Skype Ads? [Working]

If you're a regular Skype user who finds Skype chat window ads misleading, here's a clear way to disable ads and ad placeholders. The instructions apply to the Skype 7 desktop app for Windows.

Skype ads are fetched from the apps.skype.com server using a secure (https) connection. To block ads, you need to add this subdomain to the restricted site zone of Internet Explorer so that scripts cannot run from that site. The setting works for Internet Explorer as well as Skype.

However, as you can see in the screenshot, a placeholder appears where the ads were displayed. This should not bother you, but if it does, you can edit the Skype config file and remove the empty placeholder.

Turn off Skype again (exit).

Press Winkey + R to bring up the Run dialog.

Type the following path, and press ENTER

% Update% \ Skype

Double-click to open your Skype Profile folder. In this example, the name of the profile folder is ramesh_mvp.

Open the config.xml file using Notepad.

Use Notepad's search feature to search the line labeled "AdvertPlaceholder". By default, the markup looks like this.

<AdvertPlaceholder> 1 </AdvertPlaceholder>

Change the line above. That is, change from 1 to 0.

<AdvertPlaceholder> 0 </AdvertPlaceholder>

Save the file and close Notepad.

Finally, you get a clean Skype chat window without ad banners and placeholders.

Skype Home is also blocked

If the apps.skype.com subdomain is blocked, it also stops Skype Home from working. You will see the Skype Home unavailable message right now. Check again later ... which will appear briefly, and then follow an animated blue circle or progress indicator. However, you can click on a contact to start a chat instance.

Ads are a primary source of income for many app developers and website owners, and they help authors bring quality content. It is noteworthy, however, that some platforms target malware authors to distribute their stuff and infect users on a large scale. Here are some cases - See Malvertising via Skype Deliver Angler F-Secure, users report malicious ads on Skype | ThreatPost, and Skype are serving virus-loaded ads - the Skype community.

These ads mislead users into believing that they create a real dialog box with the relevant software - WMP and Flash, and a sense of urgency. Clicking on the ad, as reported by a Skype user, "will take you to a site that pretends to be Adobe and will try to download the virus to your machine."

Malvertising concerns are a good reason to block ads on Skype. Hopefully Skype will improve the quality of advertising and make its ad distribution system more robust, although malicious Skype ad campaigns may be rare.
