What to do if disk defragmenter is not running on my Windows 11/10 PC

1. Scan SFC

If your Windows defrag doesn't work, there may be some issues that are interfering with the performance of your PC. An SFC scan is the best way to detect errors that interfere with the performance of your PC. To perform an SFC scan, here are the steps -


1. In the Windows search bar, type cmd


2. From the right pane, select Invoice as Administrator


3. A command prompt window opens, type SFC / Scannow and press Enter.

Wait for the scan to finish and try running Disk Defragmenter service now.


2. Check that the disk defragmenter service is working properly

Disk defragmentation and non-opening of the optimized drive may be one of the reasons that the related service is not set up correctly. Here's how you can set it up properly -


1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing the Windows + r key combination


2. When the dialog box appears, type mscand and press Enter


3. Identify the disk defragmenter service and make sure it is set manually.


4. In addition, make sure that the following services are set up automatically -


Remote Method Call (RPC)

DCOM Server Process Launcher

RPC Endpoint Mapper

Now, go back and check if Disk Defragmenter is running on your Windows 11/10 PC.


3. Use a third-party utility

3. The command prompt window opens. Type chkdsk d: / f and press enter.


Note: The d: / character here represents the drive letter you want to repair.


7. Close all other applications

With many applications, the defragmentation and optimized drive feature may not be open, simply because they can interfere with it. The easiest way is to close all applications with Task Manager and here's how -

1. Press ctrl + shift + esckeys

2. When the Task Manager opens

3. Select the application and then press the End Task button at the bottom right.
