How to change your username in Facebook Messenger:
Step 1: Launch Messenger app on your phone.
Step 2: Now tap on the profile icon at the top of your messenger.
Step 3: Then select the 'Username' option from the list.
Step 4: Now, tap on the username option you will see the existing username and you have to remove it first and then add a new one.
Step 5: Type the new username to check if it is available.
Step 6: Now you can save the new username by tapping on the tick-icon you see in the top right corner.
Here's how to set up a nickname on Facebook Messenger:
Launch the Facebook Messenger app on your phone. You will land on your Facebook Messenger home screen.
Tap on the conversation where you want to set a nickname for the person. That opens the conversation thread.
Now tap on the person's name in the conversation that appears at the top of the screen. An info screen is displayed for that particular chat.
Then tap "Nickname" in the menu. The nickname screen appears.
Tap the person you want to assign a nickname to. An edit nickname window opens.

Nicknames in Messenger work a little differently than other chat applications When using iMessage or your phone's SMS app, for example, you can enter your preferred name for your contacts without knowing what your nickname is. Messenger, on the other hand, lets everyone in the chat see and edit all nicknames, just like the color of the chat. You may want to remember this before choosing a nickname that some may disagree with.
How to set a nickname for you and others
Setting up nicknames in Messenger is easy on an Android phone or iPhone. First, open a chat, then tap the contact name or group name at the top of the display. On Android, tapping the top right (i) will also work. Then, tap on "Nickname". Here, you will see the names of each member of the chat thread, including your own. If nicknames have been set before, you can see them here.
To set a new nickname, tap a contact Next, enter a nickname in the text field, then tap "Save" on iOS or "Set" on Android. That's it! Your nickname has been retained, visible to all members of the group. Just know that all members will receive a notification when you change your nickname, so there's nothing to hide.
Nicknames appear one after the other at the top of the chat thread and above the chat bubble of friends in the group. From your perspective, the thread is branded with "Change" right next to "You set [noun] nickname for [name]."
Other chat users will receive a notification saying "[name] set your nickname [nickname]". In their thread, it will say the same thing with a "change" option next to it. And if someone changes your name in the conversation, you'll see it.
If you want to change the nickname, whether you created it or not, tap "Change", then enter a new name in the pop-up. Tap "Save" or "Set" and the new nickname will take effect
In Messenger Lite for Android, things are almost the same Tap the vertical ellipse (•••) in the upper right, then tap "Nickname". Tap your selected contact, then type the nickname. Finally, tap "Save". You can also change the nickname from the thread when you or someone else changes a name via the "Edit" link instead of "Change" from the regular Messenger app.
How to undo nicknames for you and others
What if you have to return the order in chat? How do you undo a nickname? Start by following the same steps above when changing nicknames in the first place. This time, however, once you go to the nickname edit window, you will delete the nickname completely.
In iOS and Messenger Lite, tap (x) in the name field, then tap "Save". For Android, tap "Remove" in this window to remove the nickname for good. Just know that your friends or acquaintances will also receive a notification for this activity and they can always give you a new nickname.
You and everyone else in the thread will see a warning saying that you have cleared the nickname, and the warning will also occur when someone else clears a nickname.
