Limit Wifi Speed On Router

How to Limit Wifi Speed On Your Router - Bandwidth & Internet Speed - Working Method

Wireless internet has changed our lives. However, if you live in apartments for rent in Miramar with friends or family, you may find that your Internet experience is not as conducive to your use of Internet bandwidth.

In this article, we will explore a detailed guide on how to limit WiFi speed.

However, before we get started, let's take a look at the advantages of speed-limiting WiFi.

You can work without interruption.

If you are streaming, you will get the best possible experience without any slowdown.

If you have a limited internet connection with rechargeable data, you can be sure who is using it and therefore it eliminates the possibility of extra charge.

How to restrict WiFi to your router

There are many ways you can limit wifi. However, the most important thing is the router you are using. To make sure you don't get confused, we'll cover two major router manufacturers, including TP-Link and D-Link routers. We will also cover a generic approach for other routers.

However, as we go ahead and list the ways for each type of router, we first need to know the address of the router.

Looking for router address

The best and easiest way to find out the address of your router is to run the ipconfig / all command at your command prompt.

Step 1: Type PowerShell in the Windows search bar next to the Start button.

Step 2: Now, type ipconfig / all.

Step 3: You will now get the output with a lot of information. There you need to note the gateway IP address. This IP address is the IP address of your network router. Your IPv4 address and physical address (MAC address) should be noted.

Once you have the above information, you will be able to start the tutorial.

How to limit WiFi speed on D-Link router

Limit bandwidth also works on D-Link routers. Like TP-Link routers, you can control the speed of the Internet using a router. Also, it uses IP range or address instead of MAC address to restrict internet and control traffic.

Once you've logged in to the D-Link router, you'll need to go to the Advanced section and then select Traffic Control.

From there, you need to click "Add" and then "Add Rules".

Now, in the case of source IP, you need to enter the IP address of the computer on which you want to limit the Internet. Also, you need to assign the IP address a portion of the bandwidth and then set it to the upper floor and down floor fields. When done, click Add Rules and the settings will be saved. This way you can limit the speed of the internet using WiFi.

How to limit WiFi speed on TP-Link router

To access the router settings, you need to type the IP address of the router in the browser.

Typically, the IP address of the router is 192.168.0.1. You can type tplinkwifi.net into your browser and it redirects you to the router login page.

Once you log in as admin, you will be in complete control of the router.

From there, you need to go to Advanced Settings. There you will find a feature called Quality of Service. QoS service lets you control the behavior of your router. Also, if your router supports NAT Boost, you can't enable both at the same time.

To proceed, you must first ensure that the NAT Boost option is disabled. You can also find the NAT option in Advanced Settings. Once done, you need to go to QoS and then enable QoS on your Tp-Link router, as shown below.

Once done, you can now set a limit on upload and download bandwidth for the router. Since we are using a gigabit router, our speed is set at 1000 upload or download speed. This is where you start controlling bandwidth.

To get control of Finder, you can work with a list of QoS rules. Some routers come pre-defined with the rule set and so you can take advantage of it. Our TP-Link Archer C9 router offers a list of three rules out of the box: high priority (60%), middle priority (30%), and low priority (10%).

You can click the add button on each of the rules list and then assign devices accordingly.

Let's now show the steps to add a device or application to the list.

Step 1: Click Add on any one of your available lists.

Step 2: Now enter the device name and MAC address.

You can also view existing devices connected to the network and then connect them.

There is another option that you can use where you can limit the WiFi speed in the applications. Once you click on it, you will be given a lot of application names to add. See the image below to see what it looks like.

As you can see in the picture, you can add custom application names, protocols (TCP or UDP) and the port through which it communicates.

However, what about TP-Link routers that do not use the same to control bandwidth limits or bandwidth. On cheaper routers, you will find a straight forward option.

Once logged in, you can now click on Bandwidth Control Settings which should be found on the left.

Now, you need to tick Enable Bandwidth Control and then select the line type.

There are also two options available, Aggress Bandwidth and Ingres Bandwidth. These two relate to the actual bandwidth provided by your ISP, which corresponds to the upload and download speeds, respectively.

Once you have completed everything, you can now click Save.

Now go to Bandwidth Control and then to the rule list.

There you can add new rules where you can set IP range, port range, protocol and finally, aggression and aggression bandwidth.

You can add many rules to your liking. IP range settings should be set correctly; Otherwise, it may slow down or limit bandwidth for connected devices.

That's it! You have successfully limited the WiFi speed on your TP-Link router In other words, limit the Internet.

How to limit wifi speed on other routers

For other routers, it's best to watch documentation and online videos to learn how to limit Internet speeds.

However, the process of limiting WiFi and Internet speeds should be the same for most routers. Once you've logged in to the router, you should find the Bandwidth Limit option in the Advanced section.

All you have to do is take your time to configure it with the right set of rules. Before you proceed, you need to take note of each device you want to limit speed. Once mentioned, you can create rules for each of them and enjoy better internet speeds across the network.

There are many frequently asked questions that people who are looking for a solution to limit WiFi speed. Let's go through them below.

How do I limit bandwidth per device?

Limiting bandwidth per device can also be done through your advanced router settings. We have discussed that in detail.

How do I restrict my WiFi usage?

Bandwidth limitations or usage can also be limited by the advanced settings of your router.

Final Words

This brings us to the end of this tutorial, where we have discussed the process of WiFi speed limitation. This way, you can control the speed of your internet in the best way. All you need to do is make sure you have configured your WiFi router correctly using the IP address and device MAC address. If you mix IP addresses, you will block legitimate devices from accessing the Internet. So, it is best to double-check and keep the correct values for the best possible WiFi usage experience.
