How to use Instagram Location Search and find an Instagram Location ID

Instagram has some useful built-in location features, but also some tips on how to use them and how reliable they are. There is a rundown here.

Instagram has some built-in location search functions built-in. They are useful not only for curiosity about where a photo was taken but also for finding other photos taken at that location.

Since most of the accounts I follow are related to travel (or travel photography), I often use location features.

There are several ways to use Instagram's location byline. They're not perfect. They have some underlying disguise of how reliable they are and how they work. But they can be a great way to find the photos and accounts you want to see. So here's a rundown of how to use them.

But first, one of the most important things I should mention: The usefulness of Instagram's location features is directly related to how well users use them. This is because location is something that users assign (or don't do-it's their choice), and there's really no control over making sure they're used consistently.

That comes into play in different ways. First of all, when a user goes to post, Instagram usually suggests a place for the location ad field, there is no guarantee that it is correct. For one thing, that recommendation is based on the current location of the phone, not the image's GPS metadata.

If I were to sit in a cafe in Paris and post a photo taken in Rome yesterday, suggestions would be based on my location in Paris. There's no need to include a location - it can be blank (being able to keep it blank is obviously a good privacy option).

Second, Instagram does not define a predefined list of locations to select. In technical terms, there is no controlled vocabulary. You'll see a list of suggestions based on what users have used before, but you can create anything you like.

Search for something like "Eiffel Tower" and you'll find a bunch of options. Some are more popular than others, but there is no “right” option that limits you. And some users use the location field as a hashtag instead of doing something with the place, including brand names or things like "My favorite city" or "My street" or "Planet Earth".

Third, there is no rule that position must exist in the case of position. Many users have placed the location as a hashtag, just like you would on Twitter, instead of a field specifically designed for the place.

All of this means that searching an Instagram location can be a bit of a hit and miss. You may want to try several available hashtag options in addition to the location field. And if users do not identify the location in their post using one of these two methods, it will not appear in the search results at all.

Instagram Location Search - Basic Options

The most basic way to search by location on Instagram is to use the general search feature. In the Instagram app, tap the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the screen. That should bring up the search console.

You then have a couple of options. One is just starting to type. This is the default in a "top" view, which is basically a catch-all category for all results. This includes hashtags, people and places. So for searches like "Eiffel Tower", for example, you'll find the hashtag #eiffeltower, the various iterations of people in the location field, and any accounts with the Eiffel Tower name. So this is the most common method, but the results may or may not be relevant.

You can drill the results using the tabs, which act as filters So if you only want results from the actual location field, you can click on the "Location" tab. You can do the same thing just for hashtags or Instagram account names (aka people).

Another good option is to find more photos from the same location you are currently viewing. You can click the Location field to open a dynamically generated list of images tagged with that location. The text is short, and if you accidentally click on the username instead, you'll open the homepage of their account.

How to find an Instagram Location ID

There is another way you can work with the location field. This is most likely the case if you use an app, plugin or feed that interacts programmatically with Instagram.

As I said above there is no controlled vocabulary, but this is not entirely true - at least not under the hood. Instagram assigns its registered locations with a location ID, which is a string of numbers. Some plugins and feeds can display photos from that location as filters using that location ID, just as you can filter using hashtags.

But how that number is found is not self-evident. So here's a quick way to find Instagram's location ID for any location.

1. Log in

2. Search location

In the search bar, type the name of the place. As you type, you'll see a list of real-time results updates. It will be a combination of location, hashtag and username What you want to find is the location, and they are marked by a map icon, such as:

Click on location results. You'll go to the location results page, which will have a map at the top and a grid of photos from that location at the bottom.

4. Copy the location ID

Look in the URL bar of the browser. You will have something along this line. All you need is a string of numbers in the second-last section, like this:

Copy those numbers and paste them into the plugin or feed you're using.
