Twitter GIF is not the real GIF

Why can't you save Twitter GIFs as an image file on your computer or smartphone, as you would with a GIF on any other website? The answer may not seem obvious at first, but any media that is not a static image cannot be downloaded on Twitter.

Instead, you may notice that GIFs on Twitter use an interface that looks like a video platform, but they are missing the playback bar at the bottom of the display. This is because you can't save your Twitter GIFs on your computer: they are not GIFs at all. Instead, these are small video files where the animated GIF has been converted to a proprietary format by Twitter to make it more efficient and provide a smoother Twitter experience. Alternatively, you can convert to post videos on Twitter.

So, what does it mean to download Twitter GIF? The answer is to use a few third party tools. While it's not as easy as right-clicking an image and saving it to your computer, it's still a simple process. Let's see.

Saving a Twitter GIF on Mac

The easiest way to save a Twitter GIF is via a Mac. Here's how!

Open the tweet on your Mac that contains the GIF you want to copy. You can use the feed, the specific comment page of a post, or the person's answer page directly.

Double-click on "GIF", then select "Copy GIF Address".

To open a new tab, click on the "+" icon to the right of the current tab at the top

Go to "https://twdownload.com/" without quoting, paste the copied Twitter GIF link in the "Video URL box" and then click the "Download" button.

On the new page, tap two fingers on "Download Link" (ignore it as right-click) then select "Save Link As ...".

Name your file and select the download location, then click "Save".

Make sure your download is successful.

Go to "https://ezgif.com/" and make sure you are in the "Video to GIF" tab then the "Video to GIF" secondary tab.

Click "Browse" to see the file you downloaded.

Select the downloaded video and click "Open" to add it to EZGIF.COM.

"Upload video!" Click! Buttons to convert your mp4 to GIF format again.

Just remember that reposting GIF on Twitter will re-convert GIF to a hybrid format on Twitter, as it does with any animated GIF file.

Note: The reason you can't use EZGIF alone is because of an error on their "Video to GIF (main tab) -> Video to GIF (secondary tab)" page or Twitter does nothing when pasting the link. It doesn't do what it used to do. Therefore, you need to go back to EZGIF to convert your mp4 to GIF.

If, however, you can't get EZGIF to work on your device, don't worry.

There are numerous sites on the web that can convert Twitter GIFs, including:

Saving a GIF to your phone

Unfortunately, having a Twitter GIF on your smartphone is more complicated than downloading it to your computer, mainly thanks to the limitations of the mobile operating system. Still, some people rely on their smartphones for everything, even when Twitter is in the palm of your hand. We will use the Twitter app for Android, along with some other applications, to unlock GIF downloads on your device. Let's see.

Save the Twitter GIF using your mobile browser

By far, the most natural solution is to copy GIF, just like the method we described above. It's not hard to copy video addresses in the Twitter app, and EZGIF has a mobile site that makes it easy to save GIFs to your phone.

Get started by finding the GIF you want to save on your device.

Click on the tweet (not the image) and it will automatically open a new page.

Click on the "Share" icon below the image.

Select "Copy link".

Now, it's time to convert your Twitter image to mp4. After copying the link, open your mobile browser and go to "https://twdownload.com".

Paste the copied URL into the box and tap the "down arrow" (download icon). Your file becomes an mp4 video.

Scroll down to see your converted video (GIF to mp4) on the screen. Tap the "Download Link" button.

mp4 appears in a browser window. If desired, press the "Play" icon to see it, then tap the "Vertical Ellipse" (three vertical dots) menu.

Select "Download" from the options.

Your mp4 should now appear in your "Downloads" folder on your Android device. Verify that it has been downloaded successfully.

Now, it's time to convert mp4 to an animated GIF. Open your mobile browser or a new tab and go to "EZGIF.com". Tap on "Video to GIF".

Scroll down the page and tap "Choose File".

In the "Choose an action" section below, select "Files"

Find and select your mp4 from the displayed file browser. You need to open the file browser in your "Recent" section, or you can browse to "Download".

The screen returns to the "Video to GIF Converter" page with the "Upload Video File" section, but now it displays your file. "Upload video!" Tap this! Button at the bottom of the screen.

Scroll through the newly loaded page to find your mp4 details and a preview Tap on "Convert to GIF!" To start the conversion process.

Scroll down the page to the "Output GIF:" section. View conversion results and tap the "Save" button to download your new animated GIF.

Your animated Twitter image is now an animated GIF. Make sure it is saved on your Andrid device using a file browser. Feel free to rename the file.

2. Use dedicated apps for iOS and Android

In addition to mobile sites for EZGIF, there are several non-website apps that you can install on iOS or Android to accomplish the same thing. Apps support the ability to download and store content on your device versus storing them from a web browser, but using a web page is safe. However, there are tested and approved applications, if you have a dedicated app that does the same thing. Just be prepared for advertising!

For Android, Tweet2GIF is an app that works much like EZGIF's video-to-GIF web app but also serves as a dedicated application. One drawback of the app is the low quality conversion, but it works great overall!

All you have to do is click the Convert button once to access your GIF, not convert it, and then download it. Second, since it occurs in its app interface, GIFs are easy to download and save, otherwise. We've found that GIFs are a bit lower quality than what we want from the platform, but still, it's a reliable app.

To open it in a full-screen display, click on the GIF in the corresponding tweet

Tap the "Share" button below

Select "Copy link".

Check out Tweet2GIF from the Play Store.

Install and launch the app.

Paste the Twitter GIF link you copied in steps 1-3 above.

Click the "Download GIF" button to save a copy to your smartphone.

For iOS, you'll want to go to GIFwrapped, a reliable GIF search engine on iOS that comes with the ability to convert Twitter GIFs into shareable ones.

Copy the link and paste it into GIFwrapped's "Use Clipboard" feature.

Save the GIF to your library.

Post or share GIFs to any app using GIFwrapped's built-in share feature.

Since GIFwrapped keeps its library in the app, it's easy to keep things locked down and make them easily available!

Final Words

Your GIF has just been downloaded and saved from the clutches of Twitter, you can post and share the moving image file anywhere you like! GIFs are an important part of the online world and help pages load faster than real media files. Whether you are using a dedicated application or you are downloading content through EZGIF or another effective online source, it is essential to keep GIFs for future use. It's also stupid that Twitter keeps their GIFs locked like videos, but fortunately, they can be converted and saved for the rest of us.
