Top 6 Ways To Be A Successful Freelancer In Any Fields

Getting started as a freelancer is fairly easy.

But it takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and inspiration to survive and become a successful freelancer.

This is why most new freelancers give up the dream of working from home after a few months.

And that's why only a handful of freelancers succeed and find economic freedom.

It took me more than 6 years of hard work as a full-time freelancer to get there. Finally, seek financial freedom.

As I explained in my book, it didn’t happen overnight. I worked with 100 hours of the workweek and passed the 20-hour workday to get here. And learned lots of lessons along the way.

These are some of the important things that helped me stay where I am today.

1. Don’t feel comfortable

“You always have to think behind your mind that someone is working harder than you, someone is doing better than you. This is what drives me every day. I always think there's more work to be done. "
- Malcolm Brogdon
My life has not been the same ever since I saw this quote. It has literally changed the way I work and how I plan for my future.

Once I reach a certain point in my freelance career I start to feel comfortable.

I had two good clients who paid well. And I didn’t have to work hard. I had plenty of time to watch movies and play video games.

Then I saw this quote. If I remember correctly, I read it in a blog post by Seth Godin. Looks like he's talking to me directly.

From that day on, I promised myself never to feel comfortable

The thought of replacing me with someone who has kept me working harder than anyone else.

I have also used it as an inspiration to provide more valuable services to my clients. Because I wanted to be memorable for doing great work.

For example, I put extra effort into providing a high quality service to every client I work with. I've even added something extra to each article or ebook I distributed. Additional 100 words like writing or with free images.

Make it your mission to make your client happy. Provide a great service. Work harder than anyone else without being immutable.

2. Know that you know nothing

"True knowledge is knowing that you know nothing."
- Socrates
This quote poster is on the wall just above my work desk. To constantly remind me that I am no better than anyone else.

As author Ryan Holiday points out in his book The Ego Is the Enemy, too much arrogance can be the most toxic habit for a person.

It’s one thing to have some confidence in your skills and abilities. But you know everything and believing better than anyone can mean the end of your career.

Never take it or claim it as an expert. Always interested in learning from someone below you.

This is the key to being relevant as a freelancer and gaining more experience.

Even the best doctors in the world always have to learn about new times and new treatments.

So keep learning and improving yourself.

As a result of this idea, I continue to learn new things using online courses. I work on relevant topics in industries as well as other irrelevant topics.

This will always keep you one step ahead of your competition.

3. Forget about money

I know for a fact that most people start freelancing to make money fast.

Somehow they think it’s hard to get a job in the office, but making money from home is as easy as pressing keyboard keys.

I always say that freelancing is more difficult than office work. Because freelancing is like running a business. You manage your own clients and juggle projects. You also have to promote yourself and the services.

If you start thinking about money as your main goal, you will not live long.

The first few months as a freelancer you can only make a very small amount of money. You just have to be more discriminating with the help you render toward other people.

If you are struggling financially, get a job. Save enough money to survive at least 6 months. And then think about starting freelancing.

So forget about money for a moment. Think of ways to pay for your services. And come up with ways to give your clients an amazing experience.

And guess what, the money will flow to you.

4. Learn to be humble

How to talk to your clients and write a professional email is the key to building a long-term relationship.

But it is not enough, you also have to learn how to be humble.

Not all clients are kind and generous. Sometimes you have to deal with tough and aggressive clients. Those who criticize your work and ask for reconsideration.

When dealing with such situations, you need to be calm and able to respond politely.

If a client says you need to improve your work, don't defend yourself or start complaining. Don't even think about making excuses. Humbly apologize and get back to work and start from scratch.

Clients will not only honor you for honoring their request but they will also see you as a true professional.

Complain less and be polite when talking to clients.

5. Keep an address book

Each business keeps an address book full of phone numbers and the addresses of their potential clients. This also applies to freelancers.

Whenever I receive an email from someone asking about my services, I add that client's email address to my address book whenever I finish a project for the client.

This is my backup plan. Whenever I have to look for a new gig or run low on client projects, I go back to my address book to find my next gig.

Start creating your own client address book. You never have to complain about finding freelance jobs again.

6. Be a master of decay

If you want to survive as a freelancer for more than six months, you need to make yourself stronger.

Freelancing involves dealing with many rejections.

You will have to wait a few days to get feedback from clients. You will be rejected from most of the jobs you apply for. Your work will often be criticized. Some clients will accept you forever. Some will neglect you.

You need to be resilient to stay calm during these times. And don’t react with panic and anger.

Meditation has really helped me to increase my flexibility. I usually meditate for about ten minutes a day. And it helps calm my nerves and calm my thoughts. It even makes me feel a little stronger.

Also, building confidence in your skills is another way to increase your resilience. So keep learning new skills.
